Traditionally, printed circuit board documentation was created using CAD software, but nowadays, BluePrint software can efficiently produce assembly and testing documentation. In BluePrint, document templates are pre-built, and then the PCB file populates the document automatically. Views and texts can be edited, and the level of automation can be increased through scripting. Gerber, Excellon, IPC-2581, or ODB++ files are still used to generate documents that guide PCB manufacturing.
Automatic assembly requires optical alignment markers and space for fiducial marks at the edges of the board. The board is composed as an assembly panel since there is usually not enough space on the individual PCB. With small boards, dozens of boards are produced, while with large boards, only one is produced. When using external vendors, a subcontractor can assemble the panel and optimize it for their own processes. CAM350 and BluePrint software are used for creating the assembly panel.
